Rolex created the Submariner in 1953, which was the brand’s first diving watch for great depths. 

Fourteen years later, Rolex introduced the reference 1680: the first Submariner to feature a date. The date indication, located at 3 o’clock, is visible through a window on the dial and enhanced by the “Cyclops” lens, which magnifies the date by two and a half times. In 1988, Rolex launched the new caliber 3135 and introduced the new Submariner ref. 16610.
